We are a few days into the partnership with Ten Thousand Villages and the West Broadway store is reporting some great shopping activity! A perfect place to buy a birthday present…they gift wrap too! Pick up something for your house or try a new recipe with the amazing array of cookbooks.
Today, we are profiling an artist who created this coiled wool wallhanging made in Peru.
Julia Castro and her family live in Lima, Peru and create beautiful coiled wool wallhangings for Ten Thousand Villages. Ten Thousand Villages orders are the largest orders she receives and she is very grateful for this.
Julia lives with five other family members in her home, her husband, daughter, her mother who suffers from Dementia, her son who is paralyzed from the waist down and her sister-in-law who is also suffering from a brain injury and is mute. Taking care of her family members has been a huge stress for Julia and she has suffered with depression as a result. In order to help herself through this hard time she is training to help women in the community with conflict, the tough economy and emotional support. Every Sunday the women of the community gather at her home for a dinner and support one another through their hardships.
For Julia, making textiles isn’t about improving the lives of her family but about surviving. She hope that one day she will be working to improve their lives.
Thank you Kristen for the beautiful story. Visit her at Ten Thousand Villages for more great stories!
