A Ten Thousand Villages Celebration

Today Denise Haskett, the Executive Director/Community leader of L’Arche Greater Vancouver was presented with a cheque of $326.00 from Kristen Reffle, Manager of the Ten Thousand Villages store at 2909 West Broadway.

A great partnership between two great causes: Kristen Reffle of Ten Thousand Villages presenting the cheque to Denise Haskett of L'Arche Greater Vancouver.

The donation was collected over a two month period in which customers could designate 10% of their purchase to L’Arche Greater Vancouver, a non profit intentional community of people with and without disabilities.

In accepting the donation for L’Arche, Denise Haskett commented:

It is not often that we have the opportunity to partner with an organization that so closely reflects the spirit of L’Arche.   Both organizations are focused on building stronger communities, based on faith. Ten Thousand Villages strengthens communities around the world – as evidenced by the items in their store.  L’Arche creates communities for adults with developmental disabilities around the world through our International Federation.  We are one of those communities. Ten Thousand Villages also strengthens their local community – as evidenced by this generous donation to L’Arche Greater Vancouver.

Although the current partnership project has ended, the friendship between the two organizations has just begun. If people didn’t get a chance to come into the store during this partner-sale there will likely be a L’Arche Evening sale at another Ten Thousand Villages store in November, just in time for holiday shopping.

Ten Thousand Villages provides vital, fair income to people in developing countries by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America.  Ten Thousand Villages works with artisans who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed.  This income helps pay for food, education, health care and housing.

L’Arche Greater Vancouver is a charitable organization that provides homes and day programs for men and women with developmental disabilities.  In our homes, people with disabilities and those who come to assist them, live in family like settings.  We are an intentional community where mutual relationships are at the heart of our life together and where each person is supported to realize their potential.

The start of a long-lasting friendship: Denise Haskett, Sig Stark, Jen Kazda and Amanda Wong of L'Arche Greater Vancouver thank Kristen Reffle (center) and Ten Thousand Villages.
