L’ARCHE FOUNDATION OF GREATER VANCOUVER RECEIVES A $25,000 GRANT FROM THE HOME DEPOT CANADA FOUNDATION
– Grant to support sustainable, affordable housing project in Burnaby, BC –
Burnaby, BC (January 7, 2011) – L’Arche Foundation of Greater Vancouver is celebrating the $25,000 grant they received from The Home Depot Canada Foundation for their sustainable, affordable housing project. The grant is part of the Foundation’s Affordable Housing Grant Program and will be used to replace the existing single pane windows in their main building with double pane, energy efficient windows.
The current windows are original to the building which was constructed in 1968. New windows will provide better energy efficiency year-round and add to the comfort of the people who live and work in the three L’Arche homes, two day programs and administrative wing that are part of the main building.
“This project wouldn’t have been possible without the funding generously provided by The Home Depot Canada Foundation,” said L’Arche Greater Vancouver’s Executive Director/Community Leader Denise Haskett. “We’re so grateful for this opportunity and look forward to improving this building and the lives of people in it. We also look forward to working with the local Home Depot volunteers who may be joining us on this project.”
As part of its commitment to building sustainable homes and communities for Canadians, The Home Depot Canada Foundation launched its Affordable Housing Grant Program in 2009. Through this program, the Foundation supports affordable housing projects that include environmentally-sustainable building techniques and/or materials. By the end of 2010, The Home Depot Canada Foundation will have distributed $450,000 in grants to 18 community organizations across Canada through this program.
“Our support of this project is not only part of The Home Depot Canada Foundation’s commitment to giving back to the communities we serve, but also part of our commitment to building sustainable homes and communities for Canadians,” said Gino DiGioacchino, Chair, The Home Depot Canada Foundation. “By supporting projects such as this, we hope to provide lasting benefits to individuals and families in need.”
L’Arche Greater Vancouver was established in 1974 as a charitable organization to provide homes and day programs for adults with developmental disabilities. ”L’Arche” means “The Ark” and symbolizes the Biblical image of safety and refuge. L’Arche seeks to help people with a disability realize their potential through a stable home, companionship, on-going learning and satisfying work. L’Arche Greater Vancouver is an intentional community where mutual relationships are the heart of life together. They are part of the International Federation of L’Arche Communities.
As the charitable arm of The Home Depot Canada, The Home Depot Canada Foundation is committed to using its skills, knowledge and resources to build affordable, sustainable housing and vibrant, environmentally responsible communities for Canadian families in need. Bringing together volunteerism, do-it-yourself expertise, product donations and monetary grants, the Foundation supports affordable, sustainable housing projects, local neighbourhood improvement projects and community initiatives focused on the environment. Each year, associates from The Home Depot volunteer over 60,000 hours of hands on service on community projects across Canada through Team Depot, the company’s volunteer program.
